Do you want to feel like a true pioneer and explorer of a mysterious underground world? To do this, you don't necessarily need to fly to another continent. Near the small village of Korolivka in the Ternopil region of Western Ukraine lies a true natural wonder of global proportions—the Optymistychna Cave.
This is not just a beautiful tourist spot; it is an absolute world record holder. It is officially recognized as the longest gypsum cave on the planet (and ranks among the top longest caves in the world overall). As of 2026, tireless speleologists have explored and mapped over 265 kilometers (approx. 165 miles) of intricate underground labyrinths. Why Is It Called "Optymistychna" (Optimistic)?
Interestingly, the cave's name originated as a friendly joke. When speleologists from the Lviv-based "Cyclops" club discovered a small, muddy entrance in 1966, most experts did not believe the cave had any significant length. The colleagues who stubbornly hoped to find large underground halls and long passageways were skeptically dubbed the "optimists." Eventually, this "joke" turned into a global brand that today attracts explorers and extreme thrill-seekers from all over the world.
What Makes It Unique?
Optymistychna is a veritable underground museum of mineralogy crafted by nature itself. During a tour, you will see things that look almost extraterrestrial:
- Cave "Snow" and Flowers: Here you can see unique helictites—bizarre crystals that grow in all directions, completely defying gravity, creating the illusion of sparkling underground gardens.
- Multicolored Districts: The cave is divided into dozens of entirely different districts, each with its own unique shade of gypsum—ranging from blinding white to translucent amber, yellow, red, and dark brown.
- Underground Lakes and Camps: Deep within Optymistychna lie several crystal-clear lakes (the largest being Lake Micron). There are also real underground base camps where speleologists live for weeks during their mapping expeditions!

🛠️ Visitor's Checklist: How to Prepare
- Clothing: Regardless of the season outside, the temperature inside the cave remains a stable +8…+11°C (46-52°F). Be sure to wear thermal underwear, sweatpants, and a fleece jacket underneath the rented coveralls.
- Footwear: Rubber boots or high, sturdy trekking shoes that you don't mind getting covered in sticky clay work best.
- Physical Condition: Even easy tourist routes require some physical effort, squatting, and bending. If you have back or knee problems, or if you suffer from severe claustrophobia, be sure to consult with the guide in advance.
Logistics: How to Get to the Cave?
The cave is located on the outskirts of the village of Korolivka (Chortkiv district, Ternopil region).
- By Train / Bus: It is convenient to take a train to Chortkiv or Ternopil. From there, transfer to a regular bus heading to the town of Borshchiv, and then take a local minibus or taxi to Korolivka.
- By Car: From Ternopil, head south through Terebovlia, Chortkiv, and Borshchiv (the drive takes about 2-2.5 hours). There is a parking area right next to the speleologists' base.
- Accommodation: Right at the cave entrance, there is a year-round speleo-hostel and an equipped campsite where you can comfortably spend the night for 300-350 UAH (approx. $8-$9), take a hot shower, and drink tea with the guides.
