Fertilizers are concentrated sources of essential plant nutrients. The application process is commonly referred to as "feeding." When used wisely, fertilizers significantly improve crop yields, correct mineral deficiencies, and support vigorous growth, especially for plants grown in containers.

Which Plants Actually Need Fertilizers?

You do not need to constantly saturate your entire garden with fertilizers. Most garden soils around the world are capable of providing native and low-maintenance plants with baseline nutrition. However, regular feeding is essential for:

  • Seedlings and young transplants, particularly those grown in peat-free potting substrates.
  • Container-grown plants and potted crops (fruits, vegetables, house plants, and balcony flowers), where soil volume is strictly limited.
  • Exhausted or faded lawns that have lost density or vibrant color (following spring aeration and scarification).
  • Any crops displaying visible deficiency symptoms (yellowing leaves, stunted growth, or dropping blossoms).

Understanding Fertilizer Composition: What Does NPK Stand For?

General-purpose fertilizers contain three primary macronutrients, commonly known as the NPK ratio:

  • Nitrogen (N): Drives vegetative growth (the development of healthy green leaves and stems).
  • Phosphorus (P): Promotes a robust root system, sturdy shoot growth, and early establishment.
  • Potassium (K): Essential for flowering, fruit production, disease immunity, and cold hardiness.

Many complete fertilizers also include secondary macronutrients: Calcium (Ca), Magnesium (Mg), and Sulfur (S). Additionally, micronutrients (such as boron, copper, iron, and zinc) are required in trace amounts, but their absence can trigger severe plant disorders.

Choosing the right fertilizer and application method is key to a thriving garden.

Organic vs. Mineral Fertilizers: Which Should You Choose?

🌿 Organic Fertilizers Highly effective, slower to release, but long-lasting because they rely on soil microbes to break down. They improve overall soil structure.

Examples: compost, poultry manure, bone meal, seaweed extracts, nettle teas.
🧪 Inorganic (Mineral) Fertilizers Concentrated and fast-acting. They have a higher environmental impact and require precise dosing; otherwise, they can burn roots or leach into groundwater.

Examples: ammonium sulfate, potassium sulfate, water-soluble universal powders.

4 Primary Fertilizer Application Methods

  1. Top-Dressing (Broadcasting): Granular or dry fertilizers are scattered across the soil surface around the base of the plant (ideally along the drip line). Excellent for granular organics in early spring.
  2. Base Application (At Planting): Fertilizer is mixed directly into the planting hole or soil prior to sowing seeds or setting out transplants. Gives young roots an immediate boost.
  3. Liquid Feeding (Root Drenching): Concentrates or soluble powders dissolved in water. Acts almost immediately. Ideal for potted plants, greenhouse crops, and quick summer deficiency corrections.
  4. Foliar Feeding (Spraying): Dilute liquid fertilizer is sprayed directly onto plant leaves (targeting the undersides). Plants absorb trace elements through stomata very rapidly. Note: Spray only on overcast days or in the late evening to prevent solar leaf scorch.

Fertilizer Calendar: When to Feed Your Plants

The application schedule depends heavily on the fertilizer type. Dry organic matter (compost, slow-release pellets) is best applied in late winter or early spring, giving soil life time to break it down. Fast-acting mineral fertilizers should be applied closer to active spring growth.

Liquid feeds are utilized throughout the active growing season (from spring through late summer). Conversely, specialized autumn fertilizers (zero nitrogen, rich in potassium and phosphorus) are applied in late summer or early autumn to prepare perennials, woody shrubs, and lawns for winter dormancy.

Golden rule of gardening: It is always better to under-feed than to over-feed. Most plants require no fertilizer at all during winter rest.
