"If you reduce the energy density of a meal by 30% while maintaining its taste and size, people will consume 30% fewer calories and won't even notice, because the volume of the food remains the same," claims Barbara Rolls.
Essentially, your plate should be just as full as always, but its foundation should consist of foods high in water and fiber: thick soups, stews, vegetables, fruits, beans, and oatmeal. These should replace energy-dense components like heavy sauces, cheeses, sweets, and snacks.
This doesn't mean calorie-dense foods should be demonized. The essence is to find a filling and healthy eating pattern that brings you joy. "The goal isn't just to lose excess weight, but to enjoy your food. You wouldn't want to spend the rest of your life chewing on something you don't like just for a number on the scale," Rolls concludes.
