There are no electric lights, convenient handrails, or flat concrete paths here. It is just you, your headlamp, a reliable guide, and kilometers of absolutely wild, tangled underground labyrinths.
Located near the small village of Zalissya in Ukraine's Ternopil region, Mlynky Cave is rightfully considered the speleological "Mecca" of the country. It is a complex, multi-level gypsum cave system where every single step demands maximum concentration, and every new turn reveals a stunning subterranean secret. The cave got its interesting name (which translates to "Mills") from an old water mill that once operated tirelessly on the river just outside its entrance.

Mlynky will astound you with its sharp contrasts. Here you can see both massive, spacious halls and extremely narrow stone "pipes" through which a full-grown adult must literally crawl on their stomach, scraping the dirt off their coveralls.
- Crystal Flowers: Bizarre helictites and stone druses (clusters of crystals) grow directly on the cave walls, sparkling brilliantly in the light of your headlamps like scattered diamonds.
- "Cave Milk" (Moonmilk): Unique white speleothems on the walls that feel like soft, wet clay or cottage cheese to the touch, but are actually a very rare mineral formation.
- Complex Obstacles: Get ready for the famous "rozpory" (a caving technique known as chimneying or stemming, where you move over a chasm by pressing your back against one wall and your feet against the other) and narrow squeezes (like the "Devil's Throat") that will turn your journey into a true test of flexibility and endurance.
Routes and Travel Budget (2026 Season)
Attention: Visiting Mlynky Cave is possible exclusively with certified local speleologist guides. Independent entry is strictly prohibited and physically blocked for obvious safety reasons.
🧗♂️ Introductory Route (2-3 hours)
Ideal for those experiencing a "wild" cave for the first time. You will get a solid rush of adrenaline without overwhelming physical strain.

🔥 Extreme Route (8-12 hours)
For resilient daredevils only. This involves vertical rope descents, the narrowest crevices, and navigating to the most remote, untouched districts of the cave.

Mandatory Extra Costs: Renting a special caving coverall, a helmet, and a powerful headlamp will cost an additional 150–350 UAH. The air in the cave is incredibly clean, but the gypsum itself is very fragile and dusty, making rental gear an absolute necessity unless you want to ruin your own clothes.

How to Get There: The best option is to take a train or bus to the city of Chortkiv (Ternopil region), and from there book a local transfer or take a taxi to the village of Zalissya (a distance of about 20 km or 12 miles). Local buses also run from the town of Borshchiv.
Where to Stay: Right in the village of Zalissya, there are specialized "speleo-lodges" (caver hostels) known for their incredible, friendly traveler atmosphere. You can spend the night on bunk beds, take a hot shower, and cook your own meals in a shared kitchen. An overnight stay starts at around 300 UAH (~$8).
A Few Important Tips Before You Descend
- No unnecessary items: Bring only what securely fits into the inner pocket of your coveralls (like a phone for photos). Any backpacks, fanny packs, or bags will inevitably get stuck and cause immense frustration in the narrow stone crevices.
- A complete change of clothes: After exiting, you will be 100% covered in fine gypsum dust from head to toe. Bring a full set of clean clothes, including fresh underwear and shoes, so you can comfortably change at the hostel after a shower.
- Teamwork: Mlynky is all about mutual assistance. Listen carefully to your guide, tell the person behind you where to place their feet in difficult sections, and always lend a helping hand to your teammates on tough ascents.
